The Different Types of Cannabis Seeds

There’s a new seed bank in town; Premium Cultivars. As the name suggests, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality cannabis seeds to suit all growers and price points.

While we love our veteran growers, we also aim to welcome new or novice growers as welcoming as possible. Therefore, today, we figured it would be a good time to explain the basic distinctions between our two primary forms of cannabis seeds – feminized seeds and autoflower seeds.

Feminized seeds

As the name suggests, feminized seeds are guaranteed to grow into female plants, which you want if you aim to harvest buds.

You may be wondering, why does having a female plant matter? Well, cannabis plants are dioecious, meaning they are generally one of two genders, male or female. Male plants grow pollen sacs instead of buds, which means they can pollinate female plants to produce more seeds. Regular seeds have a 50/50 chance of being male or female, so if you want to do anything other than breeding, you’re probably going to want to go for feminized seeds, which are guaranteed to grow into female plants.

That being said, you can only breed feminized seeds from female plants. Using colloidal silver to stress out a female plant pollinates a second female plant will result in feminized seeds.

Autoflower seeds

Autoflower weed seeds flower automatically and are not dependent on light cycles as the typical photoperiodic cannabis plants are. Not being photoperiod allows for autoflowers to grow much quicker as, realistically, there is no limit to the amount of light you could give them. On top of this, all our autoflower seeds are feminized, too, meaning you won’t have a garden full of fast-developing male plants.

Creating autoflowers is much the same as for feminized seeds; however, one extra, crucial component is crossing the cannabis ruderalis strain into the breeding. Ruderalis developed in harsh climates with the sun, which helped relieve them of any light dependency and made them highly resistant. Autoflower seeds are a favorite among first-time and beginner growers as, due to their climate resistance and lack of light dependency, they are remarkably easy to grow.
