How to Extract CBD Oil with Ethanol

CBD oil is now a trending topic for its utility in the medical field. Researchers claim that CBD oil can ease the symptoms of some health issues like anxiety, depression, muscle pain, heart disease, and acne.

CBD oil avoids tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. It comprises several components like anti-inflammatories, anticonvulsants, and antioxidants, beneficial to human health.

However, buying cannabis won’t help you get all these elements. Only certified manufacturers can extract CBD components in the form of oil extract. CBD oils get used in oils, creams, edibles. In this article, I will explain how to extract CBD oil with ethanol.

What is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol is a chemical found in the cannabis Sativa plant, which many people know as cannabis or hemp. There are more than eighty valuable chemicals in the cannabis Sativa plant. In addition, the chemical is now legal in many countries as a drug for specific health issues.

Value of CBD in the Market

CBD extraction is so high in demand that the cannabis industry is always looking for new methods to extract CBD oil. As a result, the CBD market is getting more competitive, with new companies entering the industry.

That is why new methods are required for more CBD extraction. One of the methods of extracting CBD is by using ethanol.

What is Ethanol?

Ethanol or ethyl alcohol is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid. It is a good material used to produce gasoline, paints, solvents, food additives, and beauty products. You may already know, but beer, spirits, and wine have ethyl alcohol.

Ethanol or grain alcohol is also helpful for extracting valuable chemical compounds from cannabis. But, again, different sources produce ethanol.

Although corn is the most-used material for ethanol production, sugar cane, wheat, barley, and potatoes produce ethanol.

Since the origin of ethanol lies in the plants, the industry considers it a renewable energy source.

Process of CBD Extraction With Ethanol

The CBD extraction plants use ethanol as a solvent for extracting CBD. The extraction method itself is pretty old but efficient. By soaking the cannabis plants or hemp in the ethanol solvent, CBD can be stripped off and extracted in chemical form.

This method is both efficient and generally regarded as a safe method for extracting CBD by FDA. In addition, the procedure is excellent because it helps to extract CBD from hemp and the other cannabinoid components simultaneously.

Here is a step-by-step method of CBD extraction using ethanol.

  • The first step involves soaking up the hemp or the cannabis plant in grain alcohol or ethanol.
  • Using a high-proof is crucial because it minimizes the damages to the cannabinoids during the extraction process.
  • There are several different refinements and filtering stages involved.
  • There is a process called winterization to remove all the unnecessary elements gained during the extraction process. This stage is negligible if all the previous steps are well executed.

Other Methods For CBD Extraction

Ethanol extraction is the most used method for extracting CBD, but other methods also help in extracting CBD oil. For example, there is CO2 extraction, cold pressure extraction, natural solvent extraction, steam distillation.

CO2 Extraction

The CO2 extraction of CBD uses carbon dioxide under shallow temperatures to isolate cannabinoids from hemp. The chilled and condensed carbon dioxide extracts the CBD oil by cooling down while leaving no residues behind. There is robust equipment involved in the CO2 extraction process.

Steam Distillation

Steam distillation is an ancient technique, and the primary use of this technique was to extract alcohol. This is a straightforward process, and now the extraction of CBD oil also incorporates the steam distillation process.

In this method, the extractors use steam to remove the volatile materials from the raw hemp plant. The vapor produced in the process contains the necessary components. Next, the vapor is cooled and condensed to extract the material.

Cold Pressure Extraction

Cold pressure extraction is a very eco-friendly CBD oil extraction method. The process involves cooling down the hemp plant and is crushed with pressure to extract the cannabinoid components. The process provides all the cannabinoid elements after extraction.

Oil Extraction

This method of CBD oil extraction is more of a DIY experiment and has no industrial use. Instead, you heat the hemp plant in a carrier oil and get the CBD oil extracted. For the carrier oil, you can use olive oil.

Last Words

As I mentioned earlier, CBD has been a crucial industry use recently, and CBD oil extraction is very important. The ethanol extraction method is the best there is for the large-scale production of CBD oil.

The other methods are suitable as well but not as efficient and industry-friendly as the ethanol extraction process.
