Does CBD Oil Really Help In Reducing Anxiety?

One of the extracts from the cannabis plant is cannabidiol {CBD}, which can be used as oil. CBD oil contains high amounts of cannabinoids that will bind to specific brain receptors. The most known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol {THC} attributed to the ‘’high’’ in people who take marijuana. However, THC is only one of the many cannabinoids that have been shown by medical research to have a range of medicinal benefits.

One group of patients that have benefited from the therapeutic effects of CBD oil is anxiety patients. According to the American and Depression Association of America, anxiety affects 18.1% of the population annually, making it the most common mental health disorder. Though commonly treated by psychotherapy and medication, most people now forego these conventional management options in favor of CBD oil. According to a 2018 survey in the Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research Journal, 62% of respondents reported relief from anxiety, pain, and depression using CBD oil.

There has not been extensive research on how CBD oil manages anxiety. Nonetheless, some studies suggest that cannabidiol impacts the endocannabinoid system and influences serotonin receptors. Serotonin is a hormone that regulates anxiety symptoms.

Below are the findings of a few studies that have assessed whether or not CBD oil for anxiety works to help you make an informed choice on its use.

Social anxiety disorder studies

A 2010 study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology examined brain scans from social anxiety disorder patients to whom CBD was administered. The brain scans revealed alterations in blood flow to the brain parts linked with the symptoms of anxiety. In this study, CBD made the study subjects feel better, but it was also shown to change how the brain responds to situations that would usually cause anxiety in the patients.

A 2011 study also published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology concluded that CBD’s use alleviated the symptoms associated with a generalized social anxiety disorder. For the study, 24 participants diagnosed with social anxiety disorder received a placebo or 600mg of CBD 30-60 minutes before taking part in a virtual public speaking test. The results concluded that there were reduced anxiety, discomfort, and cognitive impairment in those who received CBD before taking the test.

Anxiolytic effects study

According to an article in the CNS & Neurological Disorders Drug Targets Journal, CBD oil was linked to anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects in the animal models that were part of a study. In this study, the animal models were subjected to a Vogel conflict test, forced swimming test, and elevated plus maze test to simulate situations that cause anxiety in patients. The models exhibited anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects when pre-treated with CBD oil.

Treatment of short term anxiety study

In 2015, a team of experts analyzed the previous studies conducted on the efficacy of CBD oil for the management of anxiety disorders. The experts concluded that CBD oil was a promising treatment option for several forms of anxiety, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. However, the report recommended more research on the long-standing use of CBD oil to manage these disorders. The studies analyzed only pointed out its role for the short-term management of anxiety disorders.

PTSD study

A 2016 case study in The Permanente Journal assessed CBD oil’s efficacy for the management of insomnia and anxiety in kids diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder {PTSD}. The findings concluded that cannabidiol oil reduced the symptoms of insomnia and anxiety in children who have PTSD. Its consumption helped the ten-year-old child that was the study’s subject sleep soundly and reduced her anxiety.

Dose study

In 2018, researchers set out to check the ideal dosage of CBD oil to relieve anxiety. 57 healthy male subjects received oral CBD oil doses of 150mg, 300mg, and 600mg. Some received a placebo. The oil was administered 90 minutes before the subjects underwent a simulate public speaking test. In the findings published in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry, 300mg of CBD oil was the ideal dosage for reducing anxiety. The study was small as it only considered 57 subjects and was biased because it only included male subjects. More research is thus needed to make definite conclusions on the ideal dosage of CBD oil.

From the above research findings, you are now sure that the decision to use CBD oil for the relief of anxiety by most patients is backed by science rather than hearsay. Even so, it might be difficult and sometimes impossible to access the drug to manage your anxiety because it has not been legalized in all states. Thankfully, you can get a medical marijuana card from a licensed healthcare professional to enable you to purchase the drug from licensed chemists.
