What is the highest quality cannabis?
In the realm of cannabis, the concept of “highest quality” is a complex tapestry woven from a multitude of threads. It’s not merely about the THC content, but also the intricate balance of cannabinoids, terpenes, and the overall health of the plant.
A seminal paper[1] provides a fascinating insight into this topic. The paper, published in the Frontiers in Plant Science journal, argues that the quality of cannabis is not determined solely by its THC or CBD content. Instead, it’s the ‘entourage effect’—the synergistic interaction of these compounds along with other cannabinoids and terpenes—that truly defines the quality of a strain.
Russo’s paper (DOI: 10.3389/fpls.2018.01969) emphasizes the importance of the entourage effect in enhancing the therapeutic properties of cannabis. It suggests that the highest quality cannabis is one that has a rich and diverse profile of cannabinoids and terpenes, which work together to create a more potent and beneficial effect than any single compound could achieve on its own.
Imagine a symphony, where each instrument plays a vital role. The melody may be led by the violins (akin to THC or CBD), but it’s the harmonious interplay of all the instruments—the deep resonance of the cellos, the bright notes of the flutes, the steady rhythm of the drums (representing other cannabinoids and terpenes)—that creates a truly captivating performance.
In the same vein, the highest quality cannabis is not a solo act, but a harmonious ensemble of compounds, each contributing to the overall effect. It’s a plant that has been grown with care, free from harmful pesticides and contaminants, and harvested at the right time to ensure the optimal balance and potency of its compounds.
So, in your quest for the highest quality cannabis, look beyond the THC and CBD content. Seek out strains that offer a rich, diverse profile of cannabinoids and terpenes, and remember that, as Russo’s paper suggests, when it comes to cannabis, it’s the whole plant that truly matters.
How long does it take for cannabinoid receptors to return to normal?
The study titled “Reversible and regionally selective downregulation of brain cannabinoid CB1 receptors in chronic daily cannabis smokers”[2] provides a direct demonstration of cortical cannabinoid CB1 receptor downregulation as a neuroadaptation that may promote cannabis dependence in the human brain.
The study shows that chronic cannabis smoking can result in dependence, with rodent studies showing reversible downregulation of brain cannabinoid CB1 (cannabinoid receptor type 1) receptors after chronic exposure to cannabis. The researchers used positron emission tomography imaging to demonstrate reversible and regionally selective downregulation of brain cannabinoid CB1 receptors in human subjects who chronically smoke cannabis.
The downregulation correlated with years of cannabis smoking and was selective to cortical brain regions. After approximately 4 weeks of continuously monitored abstinence from cannabis on a secure research unit, CB1 receptor density returned to normal levels. This suggests that it takes about 4 weeks for cannabinoid receptors to return to normal after cessation of chronic cannabis use.
